Lip Gloss: A Brief History

What is Lip gloss?

Lip Gloss is a popular cosmetic product that adds a shiny, slick appearance to lips.  It can be worn on its own or on top of lipstick.  This undeniably popular cosmetic was invented by makeup artist Max Factor in 1930.  Max Factor created this product especially for film lips intending to lend a shiny appearance on camera.  The first commercially available lip gloss was called X-Rated and launched in stores in 1932.  This popular brand remained in stores until 2003.

Next, came Lip Smackers, a product that had a huge impact on the beauty industry.   Lip Smackers was created by Bonne Bell in 1973.  This product really appealed to school-aged girls all over the world.  Originally, Lip Smackers was introduced to the world as a flavorless, simple gloss but then eventually adding a variety of flavors.  The first flavor to appear in stores was Strawberry but today the product is available in many flavors.  Everything from Dr. Pepper to Berry Peach, Cherry Kool-Aid and Rock Candy.   And to date, this product continues to keep up with the demands of females by now offering moisturizing versions.

Lip gloss, despite its early beginnings, did not become a commonplace cosmetic until the 1970’s.  It was celebrities, during this period, that popularize lip gloss.  In fact, the actresses from hit show Charlie’s Angels were not only sporting flipped up hairstyles but shiny lip gloss as well.  This period was indeed the most influential period for women and girls when it came to lip gloss.

Lip gloss is one the most innovative and popular cosmetic products available.  It is constantly being reinvented to meet the needs of women globally.  How is that for a product that has been around since 1930.  Lip gloss is simply timeless.
